  • A "word" on the influence of cheap Chinese tires on the American tire market

In recent years America, and the rest of the world for that matter, has become flooded with cheap lower quality Chinese tires. While a few of the Chinese brands are quality tires the vast majority of them are poorly constructed and made from inferior rubber. While these tires can be found for as little as $200 for a brand new 11R22.5, you get what you pay for. I have personally seen a new Chinese steer tire wear out to completely bald in two weeks on a customer's truck. Though this isn't always the case it shows the inconsistency with which these tires are made. Some will last six months while some will last two weeks, some will be out of round and cause your truck to go bouncing down the road and some will be balanced and give you no problems. On the other hand, major brand tires such as Goodyear, Michelin, and Bridgestone, will produce a consistently quality tire. Unlike the new Chinese brands of the last 5 or so years, which keep popping up like weeds with new names, the major brand American tires have been in business for over 100 years (Goodyear began in 1898 for example) and are able to put all that time and research into developing a reliable  quality tire. You could purchase one set of American brand tires and ride them out for two years or purchase four sets inferior Chinese tires in that same two year period. Sure the American brand tires are more expensive to begin with, but as I said before, you get what you pay for. In the long run the Chinese tires will cost you more considering how many times they will need to be replaced. If drivers continue to support the low quality Chinese tires the American tire manufacturers will be forced to introduce their own low quality tire to compete, reduce production and lay off workers, or simply go out of business. The Chinese tires are even effecting new recap manufacturers. If a driver can purchase a new recap tire for $250 or a new original tread tire for $250 most times they will purchase the new tire not knowing that generally a quality recap tire will last much longer than the new cheap Chinese tire.
When purchasing new tires please do your research and support major brand tires. Not only will it save you money in the long run, but it will also support the local business owners and workers.
